Blog - Any website by SFTP or FTP
Time: 10 minutes. Works with: websites made of plain HTML files on any hosting that gives SFTP or FTP access, including hosting without PHP. You need: the host's SFTP or FTP login (in your hosting control panel, or ask your web designer). Most sites with PHP are easier with guide 32.
SocioRelay uploads a blog to one folder of your website: one page per article, a page listing them, an RSS feed and a sitemap. Nothing outside that folder is touched.
Step 1: Find your login details
In your hosting control panel look for SFTP, FTP accounts or SSH/SFTP access. Note:
- Host (for example
ftp.yoursite.com, or the server's address), username and password. - Protocol: SFTP if offered (port 22, safest). Otherwise FTPS or FTP (port 21).
- Your website's top folder on the server, usually
public_html,htdocsorwww.
Step 2: Add the website in the app
- Blog > Add a website. Blogging system: Any website by SFTP or FTP.
- Website address, Blog name.
- Protocol (
sftp, ftpsorftp), Host, Port (leave blank for the usual), Username, Password. - Blog folder on the server: the top folder plus
/blog, for examplepublic_html/blog. - Blog address:
blog(so articles are at yoursite.com/blog/...). - Press Save, then Test connection. It says "Connected to (host)".
Step 3: Check
- Write and approve a short test article (guide 10). At its time it appears at
yoursite.com/blog/(slug)/. - Add a link to
/blog/in your website's menu, andyoursite.com/blog/sitemap.xmlin Google Search Console.
Your own design (optional)
Same as guide 32: upload a copy of one of your pages as blog/_template.html, with {{title}}, {{description}}, {{canonical}}, {{image}}, {{date}} and {{content}} in place of your page's own text.
Good to know
- Use an FTP account limited to the website folder if your host offers one.
- Plain FTP sends the password unencrypted: choose SFTP or FTPS whenever the host has them.
